Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs need to be cognizant of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs explain a sudden return of hunger.
"It was like a trigger flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
The struggle is worsened if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Use
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
