In the early hours of Saturday, reports emerged of significant explosions rocking Tehran, amid statements from Israel that it had conducted a preventative strike.
Loud Blasts and Smoke Witnessed in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in the city on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, columns of thick smoke were observed billowing over the centre and east of the city.
“The nature of explosions suggests that this is a missile attack,” a media outlet stated, though it did not initially provide further details.
Background: Rising Strains and Recent Events
The incident takes place against a background of sharply increased strains in the region. Key events preceding this strike include:
- American Naval Deployment: A significant buildup of American warships in the region, featuring the movement of aircraft carriers.
- Nuclear Talks: Latest talks between the United States and Iranian officials on Tehran's nuclear programme ended inconclusively, with suggestions of more talks planned.
- Public Statements: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a time limit of roughly two weeks had been given to Iran to settle the nuclear dispute or confront serious repercussions.
Iranian Response
Reacting to earlier allegations, Iranian officials had charged the United States of spreading “big lies” about its defensive capabilities. They dismissed assertions about missile development and casualty figures as baseless.
The situation remains fast-moving, with further updates expected as the situation develops.
