Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently went on a break to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to this match, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley stated the guidance from the captain and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," said Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard coming here against them. They entered as the favourites coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the side, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, Crawley said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
