A minimum of thirteen passengers perish and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” stated the national leader.

The president announced that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his leadership's strategic agenda for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national projects. They were built at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands swift accountability."

In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been operating in complete adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
